Men's Basketball Suffers Two Defeats in a Tough Weekend Road Trip
The FTC Men's Basketball Team traveled upstate this past weekend and had a tough time of it as they faced off against two conference opponents in Villa Maria College and Bryant & Stratton Buffalo
The FTC Men's Basketball Team traveled to upstate NY this past weekend and unfrotunately dropped both contests. First, the Five Towns Sound struggled against Villa Maria College falling 99-48. Despite moments of effort and resilience, Five Towns struggled to find their footing against a dominant Villa Maria team.
Offensive Struggles: Five Towns faced difficulties scoring, shooting just 23.5% from the field (16-of-68) and 23.5% from beyond the arc (4-of-17). Despite their efforts, the Sound could not overcome Villa Maria’s defensive pressure and efficient offense.
- Eian Williams led the way for Five Towns with 10 points and 4 rebounds, showing aggression in attacking the basket.
- Patrick Harrington contributed 9 points off the bench, shooting an efficient 3-for-7 and hitting a key three-pointer during a brief rally.
- Brady Manning added 10 points, including two three-pointers, providing a spark in the second half.
Rebounding Challenges: Villa Maria’s size and physicality on the boards posed a significant challenge, as Five Towns was outrebounded 48-23. The Sound’s inability to secure second-chance opportunities or limit Villa Maria’s offensive rebounds compounded their struggles.
Team Effort: Despite the loss, Five Towns showcased moments of teamwork and hustle:
- The bench contributed 25 of the team’s 48 points, with Harrington and Manning leading the charge.
- Ahmad McKnight added 7 points and battled on the boards with 4 rebounds, showing flashes of potential on both ends of the court.
Room for Improvement: Turnovers and ball movement remained areas for growth, as the Sound recorded just 6 assists compared to Villa Maria’s 28. Additionally, Five Towns’ inability to convert free throws (12-of-20, 60%) hindered their ability to keep the game competitive.
Coach’s Perspective: Coach Drzal said, “We had a tough time matching their intensity today; but there were positive takeaways, especially from our bench. We’ll use this as a learning experience to improve for our next game.”
While the scoreboard favored Villa Maria, Five Towns remains committed to growth and resilience as they build toward future success.
The very next day, the Sound fell to Bryant & Stratton Buffalo 106-52 at the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo, NY. Once again, FTC faced a challenging opponent and despite moments of solid resolve, turnovers and struggles in key areas proved too much for the Sound to overcome against a dominant opponent.
There were some offensive bright spots during the contest despite the score. Five Towns shot 32.1% from the field (18-of-56) and a solid 36.8% from three-point range (7-of-19). The starting lineup provided some key contributions:
- Tayron Bangs led all Five Towns scorers with 18 points, including four three-pointers and 4 assists. His leadership and range were bright spots on offense.
- Ahmad McKnight posted a near double-double with 12 points and 7 rebounds, battling in the paint and keeping the energy up.
- Jon Espinal added 9 points and 5 rebounds, hitting a three-pointer and providing a steady presence.
The squad struggled in transition as turnovers were the story of the game, with Five Towns committing 26, which led to 41 points for Bryant & Stratton. The Sound could not contain their opponent's fast break, giving up 42 fastbreak points.
Battle on the Boards: While Five Towns grabbed 32 rebounds, they were outrebounded 47-32, including giving up 13 offensive boards that led to 18 second-chance points for Bryant & Stratton.
Bench Production: Bench scoring was a significant disparity, as Five Towns managed only 6 points compared to Bryant & Stratton's 57. Despite limited contributions from reserves, Malik Moore scored 3 points and added 3 rebounds in 12 minutes.
Areas for Growth: The Sound struggled at the free throw line, shooting just 47.4% (9-of-19), missing key opportunities to chip away at the deficit. Additionally, allowing 72 points in the paint highlighted the need for improved interior defense.
Once again, Coach Drzal had words of encouragement for the struggling squad, "We’re still growing as a team, and games like this are tough but necessary to learn from; we’ll focus on limiting turnovers and playing more disciplined basketball moving forward."
Looking Ahead: The Sound will regroup and refocus as they prepare for their next challenge. Despite the loss, individual performances like those from Bangs and McKnight provide a foundation to build upon as the team looks to bounce back stronger.
While the scoreboard didn’t reflect their effort, Five Towns remains committed to improving as they progress through the season. The team now sits at 2-10 on the season as they travel to Bryant & Stratton Albany on Thursday January 30th, 2025 for a 5:00 PM showdown. We wish them all the best!
Fader's Favorite Player of the Weekend: Tayron Bangs had 21 points, 9 assists, 8 Rebounds, and 3 Steals combined for the two contests.
